13.000-TEU mega-containerships in the way.
Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (HHI), Korean shipbuilding one of mayor players in the Global Containership Shipbuilding Market has the capability to build 12,000 TEU containership.
Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (HHI) captures 40 percent of the global large containership market share. With a backlog of 145 containerships to date, HHI is currently ranked No.1 in the world's containership market It is also paving a new trend of the ultra-large containership market by securing an order to build the world's first 10,000TEU (1TEU equals one 20-feet container) ultra-large containerships in January of 2005.
Comparing the current order backlog of 145 with the number of containerships delivered since HHI's creation in 1972, which only amounts to 262, it is clear the containership market has turned up an unexpected rush of demand.
HHI is an autonomous producer of major equipments for containerships including 100,000-horsepower engine with a service speed of 25 knots, over 100-ton high-efficient and low-vibration propellers, marine generators, etc.
Equipped with a workforce of 1,300 experienced design engineers and 600 researchers, HHI develop new types of containerships to maximize operating performance both by increasing maximum load capacity and lowering wave resistance. HHI also has independently carried out research activities to construct and analyze structures firm enough to withstand high waves when the containerships are sail at high speed, all the while providing comfortable space for ship crews with low vibration and noise.
HHI embarked on containerships of 5,500TEU, 6,500TEU and 7,200TEU class in the beginning of 1990 and by 2000, and has far secured orders for 70 containerships of 8,000TEU class or higher just since 2002. Ship owners have been continuously placing orders for larger containerships because it can lower the transportation cost for each container. In order to meet this demand, HHI now has the capability to produce 13.000TEU containership.
Various big-name containership companies continue to patron HHI including Denmark's A.P. Moller, Italy's MSC, France's CMA CGM, Japan's NYK and K-Line, Germany's Hapag Lloyd.
Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. (HHI) recently secured an order for four (4) 9,700 TEU extra-large containerships from C.P. OFFEN of Germany. The ordered vessels will feature a length of 350m, width of 42.8m, depth of 27.2m with a service speed of 25.3 knots. The ships are expected to be delivered by 2008.
