A.P. Møller - Maersk sells Maersk Air.
Maersk Air has been taken over by the Icelandic group Fons Eignarhaldsfelag ("Fons") which are also the owners of Iceland Express and Sterling Airways, a Copenhagen-based airline.
Maersk Air was established by the Danish shipping organisation in 1970 but has been sold due to lack of profits.
The Danish operator declared that being Maersk Air a small airline, is has been difficult to ensure a profitable operation in the highly competitive aviation market in Europe. With the sale of the scheduled services and charter activities to Fons Eignarhaldsfelag hf, the framework for a stronger airline is created which better will be able to take on the fierce competition characterising the aviation market.
