Chilean Group SAAM - Sudamericana Agencias Aéreas y Marítimas S.A. - will operate its first port in the US - Port Everglades.


As of July 2005, Florida International Terminal, LLC, subsidiary of SAAM will manage a maritime terminal with a capacity of over 150 thousand containers per year. The terminal is located in Port Everglades, a port of great importance in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

SAAM is currently operating several ports in Chile: Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta, San Antonio and San Vicente. In addition, they are associated to the Romero Group in Peru in stevedore companies as well as operate tugboats in Mexico.

Nine months ago, SAAM started negotiations with Florida authorities, and during June the agreement was signed, allowing SAAM to operate the terminal for an initial period of 10 years, extendable for two extra periods of 5 years each. Port Everglades' infrastructure includes five docking stations, seven forklifts and approximately a 35-acre storage site.

Founded in the Port of Valparaiso, Chile, on November 1961, Sudamericana Agencias Aereas y Maritimas S.A., SAAM, initial activities were aimed at Shipping Agency, Stevedoring, Tugboats and Port Equipment.

In 1975 SAAM experienced a strong increase in the stevedoring service, which motivated an investment in port equipment mainly oriented to the transportation of general , bulk and reefer cargo, developing three years later in Chile major investments in infrastructure and equipment specialized in Containers.

In 1984 the Chilean group began the development and implementation of Container Port Terminals, making it the first company to operate a Terminal of this importance expanding its activities to the Latin American countries. It established itself in Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Ecuador, Brazil y Mexico.

SAAM takes part in the port bidding process of the main Chilean Terminals, being awarded the concessions of San Antonio, San Vicente and Iquique. STI and SVTI are initiated, and the objective of these companies is to develop, maintain and operate the berthing areas which are concessionaires. The concession of Iquique's shipping terminal was also granted to SAAM group, for which the company ITI (International Terminal Iquique) is created.
