Hamburg Süd announced christening of the "Monte Sarmiento" in Korea.


The "Monte Sarmiento" has been christened at the yard of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) in Geoje-City in Korea. The sponsor of
the new Hamburg Süd container ship is Elvira Oetker, wife of Dr. Alfred Oetker, son of Rudolf August Oetker.

The "Monte Sarmiento" is the fifth of a total of six identical 5,552 TEU container ships of Hamburg Süd. With 1,365 plugs for reefer containers, she ranks among the largest ships worldwide for the transport of refrigerated commodities. Following delivery, the "Monte Sarmiento" will be phased into the Europe - South America East Coast service of Hamburg Süd/Aliança. The "Monte Sarmiento" is named after a 2,300 metre mountain in Patagonia, west of Ushuaia.

The first Hamburg Süd vessel bearing the name "Monte Sarmiento" sailed from the Port of Hamburg in November 1924.
