Lloyd's Register to class world's largest container ships - New vessels will reach 9.200 TEU capacity.

Lloyd's Register is to class Seaspan's new series of 9,200 teu container ships, to be built at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in Korea. Seaspan has ordered four vessels, with an option for a further four. The first ship in the series will be the largest container ship ever constructed in the world.

Seaspan was also the first container ship operator to break the 8,000 teu barrier, ordering five vessels of 8,100 teu earlier this year, also classed by Lloyd's Register and currently being built at SHI.

The 9,200 teu container ships are the latest significant addition to the unprecedented high number of ships being built to Lloyd's Register class in Korea. Considering only firm orders, the number of ships awaiting construction or already commenced at Korean shipyards, Lloyd's Register is involved in more than 180 vessels.

Founded in 1898, Seaspan is now Canada's largest marine transport company. The company is based in North Vancouver and operates a fleet of 51 tugs, 201 barges, two self-propelled trainships and has now entered the container transport sector in association with the China Shipping Group.
