Lufthansa Cargo and British Airways World Cargo joined various other airlines in raising fuel surcharges on cargo.

British Airways World Cargo announced that it has increased its fuel surcharge to GBP 0.09/kg or local equivalent, effective from 2nd March 2003.

The increase to the fuel surcharge has been caused by the continued rise in fuel prices.

The index was developed by British Airways World Cargo to provide customers with more information about the calculation of fuel surcharges. It is updated on a weekly basis and posted on the British Airways World Cargo website.

Lufthansa Cargo is raising its fuel surcharge from 0.10 to 0.15 euros per kilo of actual weight on 3 March 2003. This is in line with the method announced by the logistics arm of the Lufthansa Group at the beginning of 2002. The system applies across Lufthansa Cargo's global route network and regulates the introduction and increase as well as the reduction or withdrawal of fuel surcharges based on so-called "Fuel Price Indices".

As soon as the Fuel Price Index exceeds 165 points for two consecutive weeks, Lufthansa imposes a surcharge of 0.15 euros per kilo of actual weight. In the past two weeks fuel prices have been well in excess of this limit.

Other carriers which announced increases in fuel surcharge are American Airlines, Cargolux, KLM and Martinair.
