31/07/01 Port of Savannah Sets New Record As Millionth TEU Milestone is Reached

The Port of Savannah has broken yet another record by handling more than 1,000,000 TEU's during Fiscal Year 2001 (ending June 30, 2001). Figures of 1,020,000 TEU's surpasses last fiscal year's record of 849,386 TEU's by 20%.

Having established the first fully operational container terminal in the U.S. South Atlantic some three decades ago, the Port of Savannah joins an exclusive list of approximately 50 ports worldwide that report annual container throughput levels exceeding 1 million TEU's.

"With the arrival of Savannah's millionth TEU, there's a sense of excitement and accomplishment that permeates throughout the entire Georgia maritime community," stated Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Doug J. Marchand. "We have to begin by congratulating everyone involved- our customers, our employees, the entire maritime community and transportation providers, to the stevedores and freight forwarders. This was an all-out team effort and I thank each and everyone involved for their contributions toward this extraordinary accomplishment."

The Port of Savannah will have achieved 13 consecutive years of record container throughput growth. In fact, during that 13 year span the port will have moved more than 8 million TEU's, enough to stretch end to end for 30,000 miles (48,280 km).

During Fiscal Year 2001, 46% of Savannah's 1.02 million TEU's were import related. Fueled by such cargo as department store goods (i.e. textiles, electronics, toys, etc.), a large portion of which is of Asian origin, an increasing percentage of this cargo is destined to high-volume import distribution centers in the Savannah area.

Added Marchand, "To sustain our growth and our vital role as one of Georgia's most productive economic engines, we will aggressively challenge the competition and we will sensibly plan and implement improvements to further enhance our services in order to meet our customers' diversified needs."

Since Fiscal Year 1995, the GPA has invested more than $180 million in Savannah's container terminal operations and over $240 million in facility improvements overall.

A ceremony marking the 1 millionth TEU achievement was held before Georgia maritime professionals and elected officials. During the event, a container symbolic of the 1 millionth unit was lowered from a berthed vessel by container crane to an awaiting jockey. Adorned with a banner reading "Thanks A Million. Celebrating the Port of Savannah's 1 Millionth TEU during Fiscal Year 2001.", the container was positioned near the crowd for photo opportunities and a post-ceremony news conference given by GPA Executive Director Doug J. Marchand.

Georgia's public and private port sector activities directly or indirectly support 80,100 jobs.

"The previous version of the home page had served P&O Nedlloyd well since the website was relaunched in September 2000," said Mike Chapman, P&O Nedlloyd's Website Project Team Manager. "However, it is good practice for a website home page to be reviewed and improvements made on a regular basis. 19/07/01 New telescopic height adjustable Flat Rack container design enable very tall cargo to be carried, stacked and toplifted by spreader. It's telescopic corner post can be extended to 4.115 meter - 13' 6'' , which means 5 feet higher than normal flat rack containers

Clive Smith Associates Ltd., world leaders in innovative Flatrack container design; producers of the DOMINO Collapsible Flatracks; are the clear market leaders chosen by most shipping lines, as well as all leasing companies throughout the world.

Clive Smith Associates Ltd., has designed a new telescopic height adjustable Flat Rack container design enable very tall cargo to be carried, stacked and toplifted by spreader. It's corner post can be extended to 4.115 meter - 13' 6'' , which means 5 feet higher than normal flat rack containers

This flatrack operates as a conventional 40' Type but within the corner posts there is a high strength telescopic post enabling very tall cargo to be carried, stacked and toplifted by spreader. Full strength is maintained at the maximum height, achieved in five 12" steps.

This patented product includes manual hydraulic lifting of the end walls so that the different height setting can be made manually. When folded the end walls fold flush with the floor for use as a platform flat.

Standard containers with cargo height over 8' 6'' on container vessel must be stowed on specific stowage position on-board ships and handled with special gears for load and discharge operations.

Because of this stowage limitations and handling complications, to handle over-height cargo it is more expensive than standard containers.

With the telescopic height adjustable Flat Rack container, handling problems are eliminated and costs reduced as same does not require neither special lifting gear nor it's stowage is restricted to specific positions on board.

Shippers can negotiate over-height cargoes freight better conditions as over-height cargoes on the telescopic height adjustable Flat Rack is to be handled but like normal standard container not like flat rack container.

The Flatrack Features

- Tall cargo up to 11' 5"

- Stack tall cargo with other containers

- Used as a platform flat when folded

- Lashing beams set into the floor

- Spare parts available worldwide

- Available for leasing. - Approvals

18/07/01 Dramatic increase in piracy and armed robbery to ships - IMO report about the number of acts of piracy and armed robbery against ships reported last year was up by more than 50 per cent over the equivalent figure for previous year.

During the Maritime Safety Committee - 74th session, IMO meeting encourages regional agreements on anti-piracy measures

The number of acts of piracy and armed robbery against ships reported to the IMO during 2000 was up by more than 50 per cent over the equivalent figure for 1999, the Organization's Maritime Safety Committee was told last week.

The Committee noted with concern that the number of incidents had risen to 471, representing an increase of 162 in number or 52 percentage points over the figure for 1999; and that the total number of incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships reported to have occurred from 1984 to the end of May 2001, was 2,309.

Although the Committee welcomed the information that, during 2000, the number of incidents reported had decreased from 4 to 2 in the Mediterranean Sea and from 36 to 33 in West Africa, it was deeply concerned to note that, over the same period, the number of incidents reported had increased from 37 to 112 in the Malacca Strait, from 136 to 140 in the South China Sea, from 51 to 109 in the Indian Ocean, from 16 to 29 in East Africa and from 29 to 41 in South America and the Caribbean over the 1999 figures.

Most of the attacks worldwide were reported to have occurred in coastal States' concerned territorial waters while the ships were at anchor or berthed. The Committee was extremely concerned that, during the same period, the crews of the ships involved in the reported incidents had been violently attacked by groups of five to ten persons carrying knives or guns as a result of which seventy-two crew members had been killed, one hundred and twenty-nine had been wounded and five had been reported missing; and that, in addition, one ship had been destroyed, three ships had gone missing and on three occasions the attackers had used explosive devices.

The Committee recognized that the maritime community could no longer tolerate this situation and the serious repercussions it has on the safety of passengers and crews and therefore, once again, invited all Governments (of flag, port and coastal States) and the industry to intensify their efforts to eradicate these unlawful acts.

Effective responses to incidents of piracy and armed robbery at sea must be based on preventive measures, measures for reporting incidents, and enforcement, including the training of enforcement personnel and the provision of enforcement vessels and equipment, and that the ability of States to make such effective responses is substantially enhanced when regional cooperation arrangements are in place.

Shipping is perhaps the most international of all the world's great industries and one of the most dangerous. It has always been recognized that the best way of improving safety at sea is by developing international regulations that are followed by all shipping nations and from the mid-19th century onwards a number of such treaties were adopted.

In 1948 an international conference in Geneva adopted a convention formally establishing IMO (the original name was the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization, or IMCO, but the name was changed in 1982 to IMO).

The IMO Convention entered into force in 1958 and the new Organization met for the first time the following year.

With a staff of 300 people, IMO is one of the smallest of all United Nations agencies. But it has achieved considerable success in achieving its aim of "safer shipping and cleaner oceans".

17/07/01 Samsung Heavy Industries won orders for building six container ships from 7.400TEU (loads 7.400 20-feet containers). Negotiation for 9.000 TEU container vessel in the last phase while planning to complete the design of ULCS (Ultra Large Container Ship) at the 14.000 TEU level by the end of this year

Samsung Heavy Industries - Korea - ( SHI ) has recently won a total of US$2.6 billion in orders including two additional container ships from OOCL Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. in Hong Kong . The container ship that Samsung is building for OOCL is going to be the world's largest with the scale of 7,400TEU (loads 7,400 20-feet containers). The ships are scheduled to be delivered in 1st half of 2004.

Thus, its achievements in the ultra-large container vessel field total two received orders in the recent first quarter, Since it had pulled in six consecutive orders of same vessel model (480 million dollars) from OOCL this year alone.

Samsung Heavy Industries has announced that, "it has executed a Letter of Intent for Shipbuilding five container ships at 9,000 TEU, which is the world's largest level along with CSG of China in March. And it is in negotiation for a final ship price to launch into a leadership role for the world's large-scale container vessel market, while planning to complete the design of ULCS (Ultra Large Container Ship) at the 14,000 TEU level by the end of this year."

16/07/01 A Mega-joint could be developed soon in the North America East Coast - East Coast South America trade with the incorporation of Crowley American Transport to the joint service in which today operates Columbus, Aliança, P&O Nedlloyd, CSAV, Maersk Sealand and Grupo Libra

Possibilities exist for changes in present distribution of participants in this trade which could end as from next couple of months, with the incorporation of Crowley in the same joint service with Aliança and Columbus, having in this way the three companies of the Hamburg Süd parent group operating in the same joint. Case this possibility arrives to an end, it will result in a substantial capacity reduction of the trade.

Main joint and independent services operating today in USEC / ECSA services are:

- Columbus, Aliança, P&O Nedlloyd, CSAV, Maersk Sealand, Grupo Libra

- Crowley, APL, Lykes, Evergreen

- Senator, Hanjin, Montemar, Zim, CMA CGM

- Mediterranean Shipping Co.

The six vessels which today operates Crowley with Lykes, APL and Evergreen with an average capacity between 2.400 and 2.600 TEU each should be withdrawn from the service. As both APL and Evergreen are not participating with own vessels in this service, it is very well possible that both of them will follow Crowley into the new mega joint. They are actually having calls at Buenos Aires, Brazilian Ports, Puerto Cabello, Philadelphia, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Jacksonville, and Miami.

The joint between Columbus, Aliança, P&O Nedlloyd, CSAV, Maersk Sealand and Libra operate today with two different strings. One weekly with calls at Buenos Aires, Brazilian Ports, Puerto Cabello, Freeport, New York, Norfolk, Charleston and Miami with six vessels average capacity 2.400 TEU.

The other weekly with five vessels average capacity between 1.200 and 1.600 TEU with calls at New York, Baltimore, Norfolk, Savannah, Miami, Paranaguá, Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Fortaleza not calling Buenos Aires.

Hamburg Süd group announced the incorporation in the service this year and beginning of 2.002 of the six new vessels with a capacity of 3.700 TEU each,(with capacity for 800 reefer containers) built at Korea in replacement of present units of 2.400 TEUS.
